Knowledge of volleyball positions should be known to players, coaches, and the fans. Every role in volleyball has its own set of duties that will help in the entire performance of a team. Be it indoor volleyball or beach volleyball, it is good to know the roles and responsibilities which would aid in the strategy, coordinating and ensuring maximum team efficiency.

Setter

The setter can be referred to as the quarter back of the team. They are primarily tasked with coordinating the crime through proper sets delivery to hitters. Setters must have an outstanding court vision, decision making, and fast reflexes. They also interact with other teammates and can at times make dumps or attacks to get opponents at their feet. An excellent setter determines the speed of the game.

Left Side Hitter (Outside Hitter)

Left-side hitters, also known as outside hitters, are all-round players, as they do both offense and defense. They attack on the left side and frequently are served. The strong outside hitters are good players in terms of jumping, power and precision besides playing roles of blocking and passing. They tend to be major contributors during situations of high pressure.

Opposite Hitter (Right Side Hitter)

The opposite hitter will be hitting on the right side of the court and he may be opposite the setter. They are mainly in the position of scoring points by attacking, though they assist in blocking the outside hitter of the opponent. Opposite hitters should have excellent hitting techniques, good performance and be able to perform under pressure. They can also counteract a defensive gap.

This type of blocker is referred to as Middle Blocker (Middle Hitter).

The defensive plays, quick attacks depend on middle blockers. While they are experts in stopping attacks by opponents, particularly the ones who are fast. In the offense, middle blockers make quick sets, also known as quick attacks or slides. The important characteristics are speed, timing and jumping power. Middle blockers also work together with setters and outside hitters in order to make maximum offensive efficiency.

Libero

The libero is a defensive expert, and his jersey is in contrast color and is not allowed to attack the ball above the net. They are good in taking serves, attacking in defense and enhancing defense. Liberos tend to shout out defense plays and assist in keeping the ball in possession in a rally. The other important skills as a libero are quick reflexes, anticipation, and agility.

Defensive Specialist

Like the libero, a defensive specialist is also specialized in the control of the ball and reception of serves, and they are able to rotate towards front-row positions. Substitutes such as defensive specialists contribute to the strength of the team when it comes to passing and digging. They offer rotation flexibility and take the load off of the important defensive players.
